Networks
Most businesses today either have or are moving to a local area network (LAN). A LAN generally contains at least one server, which stores the business’s database and programs, and several workstations, where people do their work.
Servers and server operating systems are optimised for high-speed database access by several workstations simultaneously. Accordingly, Attaché Software recommends that you use one of the following systems for the server:
- Windows 2000, XP or Small Business Server
- Terminal Server
- Novell NetWare
- Citrix MetaFrame
In contrast, Windows 98 and Windows ME are optimised for home use and do not provide the security, reliability and speed required by a server. Microsoft does not recommend using Windows /ME in a business environment and no longer supports these operating systems. LIkewise, Attaché Software believes these are not appropriate operating systems for either a server or workstation.
In addition, to maximise the server’s reliability, Attaché Software recommends that you do not use the server as a workstation.
